Judging by the fact that our planet is teeming with life, as they’re over 8.7 million known species, you’re tempted to say that this is the paradise of our physical reality. But the Universe is far bigger than anyone could ever imagine, and we shouldn’t be surprised by almost anything that astronomers could find new.
It happens once again that a study defies all expectations. Research led by scientist Dirk Schulze-Makuch from the Washington State University and published in the journal Astrobiology, is speaking about potential “superhabitable” planets. These hypothetical cosmic objects are not only featuring more water than it exists on Earth, but they are also older, larger, and slightly warmer.
100 light-years away
Unfortunately or not, all the 24 top contenders for the superhabitable planets are located 100 light-years away. However, astronomers are relying on upcoming and advanced tools that will be helping them gather more answers on the subject of planets more habitable than Earth. NASA’s James Web Space Telescope, the European Space Agency’s PLATO space telescope, as well as the LUVIOR space observatory are on the list.
Schulze-Makuch, who’s a professor with WSU and the Technical University in Berlin, declared:
With the next space telescopes coming up, we will get more information, so it is important to select some targets,
We have to focus on certain planets that have the most promising conditions for complex life. However, we have to be careful to not get stuck looking for a second Earth because there could be planets that might be more suitable for life than ours.
Scientists believe that life could emerge under certain conditions, although there’s pretty much a mystery how it managed to lead to the extraordinary diversity that we’re all aware of today.
Whether complex life forms exist on other planets or not, the truth is that both scenarios are giving us shivers.
