Riot Releases Details About Its League of Legends MMO

Riot has updated their website with new details regarding a League of Legends MMO.

They’ve announced the news in the most straightforward manner possible. The webpage displays a large graphic with the words “Yes, It’s True… We’re Making an MMO” in large lettering.

We also get the following news post:

“No, you’re not dreaming, we’re working on an MMORPG based in the League universe! We know MMOs take a lot of people to create, and we’ll need a pretty big raid team if we want to bring Runeterra to life. That’s where you come in. We’ll periodically post new roles, but right now we don’t have any specific openings on the team—we’re just gearing up for the journey (and need to replace our greens first). If you’re interested in joining, you can submit your information below.”

In December, a Riot developer confirmed in a Twitter reply that the studio was currently hard at work on a MMO set in the League of Legends universe, though we’re only just now getting confirmation that the project exists.

The webpage is sparse on actual gameplay information. Instead, it announces openings on their team for positions relating to development of the MMO. What does this mean for the game? Well, we know for sure that this League of Legends MMORPG is ramping up production. We also know that the game’s still early in development, so we’ve still got a long wait ahead of us.

This new MMORPG is just another part of the studio’s planned effort to diversify their library of titles. After years as a one-game studio, Riot branched out with several mobile tie-ins to their hit League of Legends MOBA, including Teamfight Tactics and Legends of Runeterra, before releasing Valorant in 2020, their first new IP since League of Legends. The studio, which is a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Tencent, is also currently developing a League of Legends fighting game, known only as “Project L.”
