GTA 5 is still a huge success, almost seven years after the game originally appeared on Xbox 360 and PS3. It regularly appears in the top-ten sales charts even today. Until now, the well-known open-world action game has sold more than 130 million copies all over the globe.
The long-term success is due to the continued support that Rockstar Games has given to GTA Online. Rockstar and GTA’s publisher, Take-Two, have earned an absolutely absurd amount of money from the game. Gamers are now worried that, as long as Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to sell a lot of copies, Take-Two will not allow Grant Theft Auto 6 to be released.
Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, has recently addressed this possibility during the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decision Conference, which took place recently. Zelnick has declared that, even if Grand Theft Auto 6 is released, Take-Two believes that GTA Online could still remain a profitable game, which is definitely good news for games that cannot wait for the next installment of the famed series. To support his claims, Zelnick talked about how successful the NBA 2K Online franchise currently is in China. He explained how NBA 2K Online 2 was an absolutely massive hit, but the audience of NBA 2K Online remained stable and actually grew. To the present day, the online community of both NBA 2K Online and NBA 2K Online 2 is on the rise.
If we extrapolate from the speech of Take-Two’s CEO, the company is not afraid of going under with GTA Online once Grand Theft Auto 6 is released. Rumors that the release date will be delayed because of GTA online could thus be unfounded.
Currently, there is a lot of speculation going on about GTA 6. Some say that the game will be set in Vice City or in Rio de Janeiro, and the ‘70s or the ‘80s are a possible timeline for the game.
