While Fortnite developer Epic Games announced a new mode just a couple days ago, they have already been met with public outcry for copying another popular game. Several Among Us developers from Innersloth, have openly expressed their frustration with Fortnite’s Impostor mode which bears an uncanny resemblance to their own game from 2018.
It is not difficult to see the strong similarities between Fortnite’s time-limited mode and the original game. The game mechanics are practically the same and the map is almost identical to that of Among Us.
Fortnite’s Impostor will feature eight agents tasked with maintaining The Bridge and two impostors whose job is to eliminate the other players. Just like the original game, players can hold discussions in order to share information, interrogate each other and vote to eject players.
Some developers at Innersloth took to Twitter in response to the new mode which was not approved by the Among Us team beforehand. The developers also claim that they would have loved to speak to Epic Games for a potential collaboration and even reached out on a number of occasions.
Considering that Epic Games is a massive corporation, it would be tough for the indie developers to restrict them from adding the mode especially since the Among Us mechanics are not patented. Overall, it seems the Among Us developers have reluctantly accepted the inclusion of the Impostors mode but are still confused and disappointed with the whole situation.
Fortnite has already had countless collaborations with some of the most popular characters, artists, and video games. However, this is one of the few instances where Epic Games decided not to ask for permission and go ahead with their plans without anyone else’s knowledge. On the bright side for the Among Us team, the game mode is only temporary and will eventually be removed from the game after a while.
