DualSense vs. DualShock: A Battery Comparison

The newest PS5 leak unveils a slew of new details about the next-gen console’s DualSense controller, including the battery life.

While the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller has been appreciated for its massive improvements over the PS3’s controllers, it hasn’t escaped criticism.

One particular thing is battery life. DualShock 4’s battery life lasts only four hours. According to the newest PS5 leak, the DualSense controller will come with the best battery life so far. Here is what you need to know.

DualSense vs. DualShock: A Battery Situation

The latest rumor comes from a Reddit user known as viper_on_fire, who posted a picture of the DualSense controller and then deleted it shortly after. Another Reddit user, blursedpersona has talked with viper_on_fire about the PS5 DualSense controller. He found some intriguing details about it.

The DualSense battery life is apparently about three to four hours longer than the DualShock 4’s. So, we should expect charges lasting seven to eight hours on average.

The Reddit post also indicates what fans can expect from the PS5 DualSense controller. The d-pad and face buttons, for instance, are believed to be comparable to the DualShock 4. The touchpad, however, is said to be “more responsive” and “clicky.” L1 and R1 don’t “click” as they do on PS4’s DualShock. It behaves instead more like triggers. As for L2 and R2, they “felt harder to push down than normal.”

viper_on_fire also ranked the DualSense controller above the DualShock 4 and even the comfortable Xbox One controller.

One reason why the PS4 DualShock battery life is not that good is due to the lightbar. The PS5 DualSense controller is removing that feature in favor of a subtler “light strip,” which is way much dimmer, and could explain why the next controller has better battery life.

Unfortunately, viper_on_fire couldn’t test the controller’s other unique features, such as the microphone or the haptic feedback. So, we should expect more details about how those work to be released soon.
