There is a lot of contradiction online when it comes to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 lineup.
Some news was exciting, some were less interesting, but the big surprise was just confirmed!
The Big News
Famous YouTuber Filip Koroy (known as EverythingApplePro) posted a video detailing a peculiar ring of magnets that will be placed inside all iPhone 12 models.
It appears to have a significant (and probably expensive) impact on the upcoming iPhone cases.
Koroy revealed that the magnetic ring, which extends downwards, will occupy most of the new iPhones’ rear side. Its purpose is unknown now, but many believe that it is meant for a snap-on wireless charger and support for car holders.
The importance of the ring has two sides. First, the company is planning significant changes for the feature, as it had to redesign its NFC hardware literally around the rings, with a tightly wound coil design that is placed inside the magnets.
Second, official case leaks revealed that the cases are built to work with the magnets to discourage regular third-party cases.
Reasoning
You might be wondering why Apple made that choice.
Some believe that it’s a matter of long term planning.
The company is rumored to introduce a wireless charging-only iPhone next year. For that to be viable, it will require an intuitive, stable wireless charging device that won’t leave you concerned about placing the phone correctly on it.
Testing that plan with the iPhone 12, where they can still go wrong as there’s wired charging as a backup, would make sense.
However, the feature adds a new mystery to the iPhone 12 lineup.
It certainly has a purpose. We just don’t know it yet!
