Meedio

Meedio is a very powerful and configurable Home Theatre front-end for your PC.Official releases have since ceased and the official forums abandoned. The vibrant developer community have moved here and the activity has only increased. We now have over 450 freeware plugins for Meedio, as well as numberous other projects.

MeediOS

"MeediOS" or "Project MeediOS" refers to a new free opensource project started by the community which aims to provide an excellent alternative to the closedsource Meedio.

JKM has released a showcase video of some pioneering work done on his MeediOS Vision theme. The video shows off animated backgrounds, 3D movie cover browsing and smooth scrolling thumbnails. MeediOS is still 'alpha' software so not ready for prime time usage but it sure looks good.

CRN released version 2 of his popular Chrome theme. It is recommended that people read the wiki instructions as there are alot of changes. The theme has been specifically customized to work well with the mymovies and meetvshows plugins. One of the most notable improvements is the speed of fanart on the main menu.

JKM released a new theme called MeeV2. The theme is based off the original Vision theme and has customizations for the movienight and tvnight plugins.

Another month, another plugin roundup: Walts81 updated his renamed moviemee plugin to allow custom scraping of sources. Enthalpient created a new plugin that is aimed at importing movie details 'hands free', check out MovieFairy and give some feedback in the forum thread. For any runners out there Ccrocker developed a plugin to track your progress using the Nike+ IPOD device from inside meedio. Finally for all the oldschool game fanatics Reverson1 released a Mygames plugin that can play old Emulated rom games from inside meedio.

August has seen a new VLC player plugin based on the popular open source software released by forum member Schnufki. Also thetvdb.com finally turned off their old interfaces so everyone needs to update to the new MeeTVShows importer by walts81. For anyone who uses last.fm to track their music, Shawn Bass released a Scrobbling plugin that will send song details from meedio to your last fm account. Last but not least the popular MovieMeeImporter has lots of new options.

As always there has been lots of activity in the meedio community creating and updating plugins. This month's highlights include a nicecovers.com importer by walts81, a new fanart group module by stealth82, a MLB.tv plugin by reverson1 and MusicIP functionality by hisdudity. CRN has posted some screenshots of a new 'chrome' modification to his popular vintage theme. The update effects the main menu and the mymovies plugin screens.

JKM has updated his MeediOS theme to work with the latest binary build. This is the first 3rd party MeediOS theme to be created and shows off what is already possible with the WPF skinning engine. Features include fanart, aeon menus, animations and transitions. JKM has asked for some feedback in the thread on the cpu performance while using the theme.

The Meedio 'MyMovies' plugin has had an experimental coverflow feature for a while but this is the first release that really makes it work. Walts81 was able to integrate a DLL from another forum member Jetblack into mymovies that allows fully animated 3d scrolling covers!

HDWagner has added OSD functionality to MeediOS. It allows plugins to show status messages without interrupting the user experience. OSDs are simple to use in plugins: Just like any other screen an OSD is defined by a screen file. What makes it an OSD is the fact that it can’t be focused, so it leaves interactivity to the screen below(as opposed to a DialogBox).

HDWagner has added sound theme functionality to SoundPlayer of MeediOS. A sound theme is completely independent of screen themes and is a translation table which converts any message of any plugin to a sound file. This essentially means that everything – be it a visual control or an invisibly system event – can trigger a sound. The sound theme can be chosen via SoundPlayer properties in ConfigurationEditor.exe.

HDWagner has added a ticker control to MeediOS’ collection of screen elements. It’s compatible to Meedio’s IMeedioTicker and adds lots of new functions. Now it can be used just like a menu, allowing clicking a ticker entry to navigate to the full story. If put onto an OSD, a NewsPlayer could bring up breaking news no matter which screen is currently shown.

HDWagner has joined the audio volume settings of standard players into MasterVolume. MasterVolume now not only sets the main volume, but also allows setting the relative volume of MusicPlayer, SoundPlayer, TVPlayer and VideoPlayer individually. Equalizer, channel mixer and Windows Vista compatibility are still to be done.

HDWagner has created a completely new SoundPlayer plugin for MeediOS. Per default it plays the sounds by itself, but can be configured to let MusicPlayer do the job. In either mode SoundPlayer listens to status messages of other players, so it doesn’t play system sounds if music, video or TV are playing.

One of meedio's most popular theme's meedioVintage by Crn has had a major update to version 2.1.0. The update includes elements of the Xbox media center's Aeon theme, new fanart capabilities and performance improvements. Some of the screenshots are simply stunning so don't waste any time checking it out.

Dhrandy has followed up his excellent Perception theme with a port of the xbox media center 'Vinci' theme. It should support all the latest plugins so what better excuse do you need to look at Vanessa mae all day!

Looking at the openmaid stats tells us 28 different plugins have been updated in the last 30 days. Althack created a new web browser plugin that replaces the old meedio one that caused exit errors. Binary64 completely re-wrote his backmeup plugin to support ISO image ripping of dvds from inside meedio. Walts81 also released a tv shows importer that uses the new thetvdb.com xml interfaces, this should work with both the updated tvnight and meetvshow modules.

UFGrayMatter has been working hard on a new version of his popular TVnight plugin by adding features such as custom fan art, random episode queuing, filters, trivia, actor details and episode quotes. Check out the TVNight3 Video for a demo or the link below for download.

HDWagner has posted a couple of new updates on the progress of MeediOS. There are lots of changes to the WPF user interface including animations, scrolling menu items and full theme support. It's really starting to look like a proper home theatre application now.

HDWagner posted a new progress update for MeediOS on the forums. The biggest improvement is the introduction of 3D menus shown in the screenshot. He also made the code more effecient by changing the way messages are sent internally.

March has been yet another busy month for plugin updates with 28 different plugins being updated in the last 30 days. Jetblack updated Covercow several times to add support for embedded jpegs and additional view steps. Walts81 updated his movie information plugins (meemovieimporter and meemoviemodule) to work with movie-xml again and UFGrayMatter started a new tvnight 3.0 plugin with support for fanart.

HDWagner informs me the MeediOS MediaFileBrowser has gone beta. The module plugin is feature complete and ready for testing. It features everything that's useful in Meedio's File Browser and Meedio's Media File Browser modules. HDWagner also added support for image players and prepared the plugin for all the suggested improvements.

In the true spirit of open source, a forum member called timewinds has created a set of WPF controls including "elementflow". HDWagner didn't waste any time and already has it running in the MeediOS slide show viewer! [Link..]

Its been 3 weeks since the last report on the development of MeediOS and a huge amount of progress has been made. HDwagner has added support for events in screen files and Kairos has added a video player based on VLC. DocZoidberg has also been busy working on a tag mask importer. [Link..]

If you've ever used an apple ipod(and lets face it, who hasn't!) they introduced a great visual interface called coverflow. Forum member jetblack decided to learn delphi to port the cover browser to meedio. [Link..]
